Elkie is correct, I think. I've seen these spiders in Michigan as well.

I've seen many more Black and Yellow Argiopes, though, which are even bigger. There's at least two outside my house now. Pic:

There's also a Banded Argiope outside my house. Also quite large. Pic:

Do a search on the internet. Something like Michigan spiders and then go from there. It should tell you about the spiders that are common in your area. It can't be a wolf spider as they do not make webs.

I woke up the other morning with a big brown spider crawling on my arm!!! I hate spiders and have never had something like that happen. I am still freaked out.

I dont think that brown recluses make webs either but I could be wrong about that. I am pretty sure they are only found in southern states. We had em everywhere in FL. It's true, they are very poisonous and a bite will rot your flesh.

it's commonly called a garden cross spider... they're great to have in your garden or yard because they eat bugs that would normally damage your plants... also their webs are generally pretty big and dramatic... very pretty to look at... and they remake the web every 3 days or so. if you can watch one making their web it's really very interesting.

no it's not a brown recluse... recluse are small, never bigger than a nickel and they don't like the open or places with lots of light. you'll find recluse in a wood pile or under boards in your yard. also recluse rarely make webs... they're active hunters... not wait and ambush hunters like cross spiders.
