It will increase your mileage more than if you had it on the coolest setting. Having the air conditioner on while driving will always decrease gas mileage due to the fact that now the engine needs to spin the pulley of the ac compressor. So, having the air conditioner is less fuel efficient than having it off.

No. When the air conditioner is turned on, the engine-driven compressor is engaged. The temperature setting allows engine water to flow through the system and provide air that is less cold.

THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE WHATEVER .
IF YOU TURN THE A/C ON THE COMPRESSOR CLUTCH ENGAGES AND THE A/C COMPRESSOR COOLS THE CAR
IF YOU HAVE IT ON FREEZING COLD OR NOT THE COMPRESSOR IS STILL RUNNING
THE DIFFERENCE IN HOW COLD YOU SET IT IS ALL A FUNCTION OF WHAT ARE CALLED BLEND DOORS FOUND UNDER THE DASH
THE DOORS OPEN AND MIX COLD AIR WITH WARM TO GET THE RIGHT COMFORT LEVEL
THE COMPRESSOR IS STILL DOING ITS JOB JUST THE SAME
THAT IS FOR MANUAL A/C UNITS
IF YOU ARE EQUIPPED WITH AUTOMATIC OR TEMP CONTROLLED A/C U SET A THERMOSTAT TO THE DESIRED TEMP
IF IT GETS TOO COOL THE COMPRESSOR MAY SHUT OFF MOMENTARILY THUS SAVING A SPEC OF GAS
NOT ENOUGH TO BOTHER WITH

NO!!
When you set the air conditioner to a "less cool" mode it opens the valve to your heater and warms the incoming air.
The air conditioning compressor operates at it's normal output.

I know that not using it will improve mileage, but not sure if using it less will help. Seems like it should!

I think so. If you drive with your windows down, yes, for about 30 more miles I believe.
