Red or Silver maple grow the fastest.MT.Oak or Water oak provide best shade.Be aware that the Water oak is a small leaf tree that makes rakeing a real chore in the fall.

We moved to NC in April to a yard with no landscaping at all...We chose a Red Maple - Autumn Blaze for our yard.

We got it from Oak Ridge Nursery near Greensboro - Great prices and awesome trees!

Agreed, maple is in my experience the "fastest" growing. I'm in coastal carolina and of all that I've witnessed, the maple still does a good job. You can also try a Poplar.
