I'm 6 1/2 months pregnant now, and I'm not sure when I should apply for disability for pregnancy, or how to go about doing this. I live in CA.

Yes, you can file for disability. My aunt just did for her pregnancy, so did my friend who was pregnant 2 years ago. This is for the time you need to go out on leave.

And yes, pregnancy is a disability...it disables you from working for a short amount of time.

This is ridiculous that people are making fun of me for asking a serious question.

I am working, I have a full time job and insurance. All I was asking, was how do I get paid disability leave when it is time for me to have the baby?

Thanks to all the people who weren't rude, I appreciate your answers :)

People should not answer questions like these if they have no knowledge on the subject. Begin by visiting this site: http://www.dfeh.ca.gov/Statutes/pregnancyleave.asp

You are eligible for up to 4 months of disability if deemed disabled by your doctor (how early depends on risk of pregnancy, but as late as two to three weeks before birth). But anytime a doctor says you are disabled, you are disabled! This disability does not count towards you paid family leave, and both can be taken seperately.

I live in California too. My employer gave me the disability forms and when I was ready to go on leave I gave them to my doctor who filled out his part and sent them in. You do this right before you go on leave. You only get 4weeks before the baby is born, unless your doctor puts you out early because of some high risk condition. Your disability benefits will automaticaly stop 6 weeks after the baby is born (8 weeks for a C-Section), unless your doctor has you stay out longer and then you will have it extended. If you work at a place where there is at least 40 employees and you've been there for at least 12 months, you will then get 6 weeks of paid family leave, which also comes from EDD and comes to the same exact amount of your disability. They automatically send you those forms when you receive your last disabiltiy check. Both the disability and paid family leave comes to 55% of your pay. here is the websight that will explain disability and paid family leave.

Oh, and to all the rude people who are answering, here in California, we pay into SDI (state disability) so we can then receive the benefits. Having a baby is considered to be an eligible condition since it takes a huge toll on a woman's body., The paid family leave, which both the mother and father can get, is for additional bonding time. This is something else we pay for as well.

How STOOPID are all these people? Pregnancy itself is not a disability, until it causes you to not be able to work. ie, bedrest. How about after?? Come on people. You get disability for not being able to work due to medical reasons. HMMM, pushing a baby out of your body or having a c-section. Anyway, enough about the lame people that don't know what "disability" means. You can't file until after the first day you do not go to work. Your employer may have the paperwork, but may not. You can always search "state of California employment department" on the internet and go to their website. You can fill out the form online, print it out and have your doctor sign it. Then send it in. It takes a good couple of weeks before they will get back to you. I sent mine in so late I got one check for the whole time. Good luck.

Yes, you get the state disability insurance in CA (it IS an insurance, and we do pay for it), ONLY if you are employed. Get the form from your HR or your doctor's office. I was told you can send in the form ahead of time, and update them when you actually deliver the baby.

If you have some other forms of short term disability insurance, just contact that insurance company. They'll give you some payment for 6 weeks as well.

Pregnancy is a disability if it is high risk. The only way you can collect disability in California during pregnancy is if your doctor has deemed you UNABLE TO WORK.

I know, I live in California and I'm currently 61/2 months pregnant. I wish I could go on disability but my pregnancy has been flawless (thank god). So if you are unable to work, just go to your HR department and ask for the papers. You will have to take it to your doctor and then back to HR and you should be good to go.

yes you can get disability due to pregnancy 4 weeks before you due and 6 weeks after (or for c-section 8 weeks) pick up the disability forms and have your doctor fill them out and send them in for you.

I wasn't aware that pregnancy was a disability. But try the Family and Medical Leave Act instead.

Ask your employer about the Family and Medical Leave Act. Your employer should have the forms you need.

OMG it truly IS the GOLDEN STATE!
I did not know you could be declared disabled for being pregnant!

I am going to tell everyone I know.

Oh wait, I forgot to answer the question---try the local social security office, that's who I'd call.. it should be in your "blue" (government) pages under FEDERAL and then "social security administratIon".

I'm calling mine RIGHT NOW to see if we can do the same HERE!
