LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- Whitney Houston has filed for divorce from her husband Bobby Brown, her publicist told The Associated Press on Wednesday.

Publicist Nancy Seltzer declined to reveal where or when Houston filed the divorce papers, and said the singer had no statement to make.

"I can just confirm that she has filed for divorce," Seltzer said.

Houston and Brown, who married in 1992, have had a sometimes tumultuous marriage, and rumors of their breakup have surfaced often over the years.

The couple have one child, 13-year-old daughter, Bobbi Kristina.

I thought she should have filed for divorce a long time ago. Not because of the drug problems but because they never seemed like a compatible couple from the start. I was never the one to think that Bobby Brown was her down fall. I felt Whitney was on coke long before she met him. But she, like a lot of women lost herself in her man. That can't be blamed on Bobby, that's all Whitney's doing.

I think the divorce will be good because it will give Whitney a chance to assess where she is in life right now. Bobby has a tv show and is still making guest appearances on people's album. He's still making moves, still making a little money. Whitney on the other hand is standing still.

I'm not really surprised, they were doomed from the start. It never bothered me that Bobby had kids with 2 or 3 different women, or that Whitney's 6 years older; I had a problem with the fact that Whitney would marry someone who had so much baggage and couldn't stay out of trouble. I hate to speak ill about my people, but sometimes we must crack on our own. I'm sure that somebody put up a webpage that counted down the days until it happened. I feel sorry for Whitney because she let Bobby ruin her career and her reputation; no matter how hard she tries to clean up her image, she will always be seen as "ghetto". Now that she's come to her senses, I hope that for their daughter's sake, Whitney and Bobby don't turn their divorce into another tabloid freakshow,

Recent reports have suggested that Karrine Steffans, the self-proclaimed "Video Vixen," may have caused the impending break-up of Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown's marriage. But a source with knowledge of the relationship tells TMZ that it's Brown who has sought out Steffans for moral and financial support: He stays at her L.A. home "frequently" and Karrine actually ponies up for Bobby's pre-paid cell phone.

According to the TMZ source, there is in fact no romance between Brown and Steffans, and that outsiders are creating that illusion because of her past, in which she was known as "Supahead" by legions of R&B and hip-hop artists to whom she provided sexual services on the sets of their videos. She wrote a book about her experiences, "Confessions of a Video Vixen," which was a New York Times bestseller.

Steffans recently told the New York Daily News' Lloyd Grove that her relationship with Brown was "a really tricky situation" and called him her "dearest friend," but wouldn't admit to having a physical relationship. During the summer, at a concert Brown gave with fellow '80s artists Bell Biv Devoe and En Vogue at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles, Steffans was backstage and in fact took Brown home in her car. Brown had told the audience that he and Whitney were on the rocks and that he needed a "tenderoni" to take home. It appears he found that "tenderoni" in the form of Steffans. Brown and Steffans' encounter that night was caught on tape by a show called "I Married A Baller" on the TV1 network."

I am sick of Bobby's ignorants. Whitney is trying to get clean, and he is doing nothing to help his wife!!! You can't say Whitney hasn't tried to get clean. She has. Bobby is doing nothing for his family, he's just getting high with his wife. My father was on crack for yrs, and I feel sorry for there daughter Kristina because, both of her parents are on drugs. She's at that age where Prue-pressure is a norm in teenage life. One parent has to do it, and it mine as well be Whitney. Bobby's been problem "my prerogative" "Humpin around", when he gets older...sickness may attack his body. Some times it takes things like that for people to wake up. That's what my dad had to go through. This is not about a comeback, this is about mending her relationship with Kristina. Because a child knows what's going on. Just like Whitney said on Wendy Williams show "My daughter isn't a idiot".

I am shocked. Totally and completely shocked. Thank goodness! Whitney has finally seen the light. She needs to get off the stuff, and become respectable again. Alos, I hope Bobby doesn't take her to the cleaners. Here's hoping that there was a prenup!

I think it is a tragedy when a couple ends up divorcing and yet I know that people grow apart. As far a these two----I am surprised the marriage lasted as long as it did..........she was so great before she married him and her life has gone down hill since the marriage. I just hope that they handle it right for the sake of their daughter.

If it is true, and I've heard this before, I hope it is true. Maybe she can get cleaned up and make a comeback, if she still has her voice. She is the ultimate tragic example of a life and tremendous talent utterly wasted. Very, very sad. And their poor little girl, growing up now and probably doesn't stand a chance unless her mother gets her head out of her a** and leaves that train wreck named Bobby Brown. I do believe that man is beyond hope.

Whitney and Bobby have had a turbulent marriage which culminated in drug abuse.
I hope that this is the first step on the way to recovery for them both and their daughter.
