Our code is 'personal problem', and then we'll let you go. Talk to some of your friends or female teachers and see what the code is in your school.

I afford my students 3 bathroom passes for each 9-week grading term. Sometimes I know they need to go somewhere else, like their lockers, but if they use their passes, they use their passes. Once they've used them, it's on them whether or not they're willing to accept a tardy.
I hope you were reasonable in the face of this emergency. I had one student who left stained because she was stubborn. She had showed up tardy too many times and one more would mean in-school suspension. She preferred to wait--not even going during lunch--rather than accept a tardy.
As long as students are willing to accept consequences for habitual bathroom breaks/tardiness, and they can do it without disrupting class, I see no problem with using the loo.

Its embarassing, but as soon as you would have said "female problems," your male teacher probably would have let you go to the washroom. But, its kind of like "the boy who cried wolf." The more you ask, the less likely you're going to be let out. Why should I let my students all go to the bathroom during my class? I actually had to ban one class from the bathroom for a few weeks when I was student teaching because most of them just liked to take a walk. If I can hold it for 3+ hours, so can they. But of course, there are exceptions, like having to throw up or female problems.

I let kids out to use the washroom, but I make a note on my record sheet every time they ask. If there is a pattern, or it seems to be a habit of leaving the classroom, then they lose the priviledge, or they have to wait for another teacher to escort them if it is an emergency.
I prefer if they can wait until the "taught" part of the lesson is through before they go, but if they seem urgent about it, I don't mind letting them out.

The problem with this situation is that legitimate reasons (like what you mentioned) often get lost in the midst of other students abuse of a more lenient system. I'm a teacher in a small school, so I know that all my students have time to use the restroom in between classes, and I don't allow them to leave during my class. However, if they ask me personally (I walk around a lot while I'm teaching, so there's opportunity for that) and I can see that it's an emergency and not an excuse to leave class, I will let them go. Talk to your teacher outside of class and ask him what he would like you to do in a situation like this in the future. I bet he will be very understanding!

Yes... assuming they have to go... in late elementary smoking is a problem...
as a teacher one should be making the students go before class...
Dont be embarrassed... pissing yourself would be more embarrased.
