First and foremost, tampons are a big enough health risk as it is without putting a tampon into your vagina when not menstruating; this furthers the risk of infection, TSS and vaginal splitting. If you want to use something before your period is due use safer options such as sanitary pads or menstrual cups.

You were likely just feeling discharge coming out of your vagina, or if you were feeling it internally then of course the blood could have came out of your cervix and had just settled within your vagina without coming out yet.

When you are close to menstruation it is common to just get a little bit of blood, it's not like a light switch that turns on and off, the uterus lining may shed slowly at first.

This happens to me a lot. Due to being on birth control, my periods are really light and there isn't enough of a flow to make the blood come out onto the pad.

Maybe you had some clear discharge, and that's what you felt coming out when you had the pad on?

My period often starts with very light brown spotting, then comes on full bore the next day or two. So maybe that's what you are experiencing too.

It's just the initial phase of your period. My doctor says it's fine to wear a tampon in the first few days leading up to your period "just in case". Use a very small tampon (like the Tampax Compact Junior tampons, which are smaller than the normal Tampax Junior tampons) and change it every eight hours.

Your just starting your period. The blood flow is very light and is taking it's time coming out. When you put the tampon in it absorbed what blood was there. I'm sure by tomorrow your flow will be heavier.

This sometimes happens to me. Maybe you are going to get your period in a day or so. I know this is what happens to me. I start with some light spotting that just shows up on a tampon and then 1-2 days later I start full on. I wouldn't worry about it unless you don't get your period at all.
