It's only bad if it's humming a bad tune.

Okay, seriously, did it just started doing this, or was it like that all the time? Most hard drives are fairly noisy.

If your hard drive just started making more noise, then it's possible that there's something loose in your computer. Maybe the screws holding the hard drive in place are loose. Or maybe a cable or something is leaning against the inside of your computer case and the vibrations coming from the hard drive is causing something else to make noise.

Maybe, maybe not. All hard drives make some noise when being accessed, some more than others. Virus scans, downloads and installs induce lots of hard drive activity, so it would be normal to hear it at this time.

If the hard drive is making louder and louder noises, then it is a sign that an internal part inside the hard drive is going out.

under 95% of cases there is absolutely no problem when HD makes a humming sound. probable reasons can be loose screws etc. but 5% of cases indicate that ur HD has bad sectors in it. then it is a real cause of worry for u.
but both d sounds r bit different frm each other. some experienced person can tell d difference. for example normal sound is ghurrrrrrrrrrr. and bad sector sound is kattttttkattttttt.

possibilities are high, its the followers inflicting the factor cover to vibrate, subsequently once you eliminate the canopy, you dont hear it. if it rather is the stress, then i could back up your information, reason that lots noise from a stressful stress is by no skill a stable sign.
