I like to think my father died for freedom, my grandchildren have a good life , I have not had a bad life, I just hope that things improve in the future, so that my grandchildren and their children can have a good life, the way things are at the moment I am afraid to think of the future !!!!!

At the time it was for the benefit of a decent way of life and the social class structure was different. Also the pride of being with your pals doing your duty as you thought.
If the same thing happened today then most people (who are in well paid jobs) would be apathetic to fight unless already in the services. But as with most human spirit compassion overcomes atrocity as seen via 9/11 and other such tragic episodes.
Also if people did not die then there would be no room on planet earth for anyone else. In other words war is just another cycle of birth, life, death and rebirth.

My grandad didn't die, but he fought, and suffered, for six long years. He suffered all the more because he was by nature a kindly, gentle man who hated all things military.
Yet he felt he was fighting a real and tangible evil, That Nazism had to be stopped, and that all that was need for evil to triumph was for good men to do nothing...
He was a socialist, and saw much that was wrong with the England of the day, yet he felt strongly that for all our faults, we were better by far than the national socialist tyranny.
So I can't agree with your statement that 'it definitely wasn't freedom of choice, democracy.....'
That is exactly what my grandfather and his brothers were fighting for. Whether it was achieved, whether it was only an illusion, is irrelevant - they believed in it, and fought for it.

It most certainley was our freedom. Would you want to be living under Nazi rule? "read what we say, speak what we say, look how we say"
100s of 1000s died because of these people and that were just from the jewish population, what would the country be now if our men hadnt fought so hard for us? Im proud my grandfather fought AND survived it wasnt for the money it was for us.
Im saddened you can ask this question im proud to be and be able to say im british and that our men loved our country enough to die for us.
If you want to live like the way we would have been living had nazis won then join a nazi extremist group.

The entire world was under the treat of totalitarianism. Through his writing Hitler describes his plan to conquer and rule the world. He wanted to start with Russia, western Europe was his second target but the French made things easier than he thought and he took the opportunity, that is why he delayed the invasion of England. They definitely weren't in it for the money, they died to save you and me from living under a totalitarian regime, I'm neither English nor American but still I am very thankful of their sacrifice.

Hey Chris S,
You are talking about WWII period. Hope it was to keep out anarchy. Sure what resulted is not perfect, but it is better than the controlling government that would have resulted if they had not fought for us. As far as how much money they made, it probably bought food, money being worth more then than it is now.

if you don't believe that it was the right to be not invaded by a foreign power that had nothing in mind except domination and tyranny (at least going on their record elsewhere), then why are you bothering to ask?
