I have tried defrag. that didnt help. Yes, I was hoping to do this without paying...dont have the money. I also can't afford to hire someone. I was hoping to remedy this on my own, and without cost?

Increase memory size, defrag HD, change virtual memory size (make it fixed size). Cjeck for viruses. Upgrade CPU and use 16bit on your VGA setting as well as 60MHZ screen refresh. Check if you CPU and mainboard are running hot. If so check fans and add a new one to the case.

All of the answers mentioned are factors. There is yet another. Your computer may have multiple anti-virus programs running and multiple protection programs working. This may be evident IF you have added some of these programs, like Norton's or McAfee to your computer. I prefer Norton's and had to turn off the XP protection software including the Firewall. I use the Norton's Firewall. Hope this helps.

Lots of ways to speed it up...
now, you want to speed up for free? A little tougher

Check for running programs (down on the taskbar) close what you don't actively use

Defragment your drive
Clear out old file (disk cleanup)

Check for spyware (download Adaware) yeah, it's free

Check for viruses

If you really want to optimize, you can turn off services that you don't use (don't mess with this unless you're comfortable)

With $$:
Add more RAM

It's possible that your computer has been infected by spyware or by a virus. Download Spybot, Ad-aware and AVG from the links below. Your problem might also be low memory; you may need more. Just a couple of suggestions.

must check your system configuration. If it was running okay earlier then it may either be a virus attack or some newly installed programme might not be working properly and using a lot of system resources. Take help of someone who is knowledgeble

Check your available physical memory (RAM) in Task Manager's Performance tab...if it's below like 35000, you need to add more. Also, check for spyware and viruses...they can cause slowdowns like you have described:
