There are many different scales ie: pentatonic, ionic etc... They are all unique and sound different. Some are used in blues while some are more appropriate for Rock or Jazz or whatever style that it's applicable to. Most however, have one thing in common and that is they are in tune with themselves.....meaning if you were playing an instrument in blues scale and you came out of the scale and hit a wrong note you would immediately know it...it wouldn't sound right to your ear.

The most common music scale is the diatonic scale. Think of the movie, "The Sound of Music" when Julie Andrews sang, "Do . . . re . . . me (mi) . . . fa . . . .sol . . . .la . . . ti . . . do."

A chromatic scale is taking a step-by-step movement, either up in pitch or low in pitch, until the music letter is repeated.

oh, but it depends on the scale:
for instance
F# minor scale sounds like a cautious sneek through the night
G major 7 sounds like a triumphant march through the town square
A major to F and/or C major has a "discovering a new revelation" kinda feel
and
F flat augmented 4th.... well, you have to hear that one to understand....
