I was told that to save space cemeteries burry the dead upright (standing) instead of horizontal (lying down). I find that hard to believe. Perhaps someone on this site knows the answer.

You haven't been to a burial have you..? All the ones I've been to they're laying down..wasting major amounts of space..Yikes!

At all the cemeteries that I know of, people are buried lying down, horizontal. There may be some places where they stand them up, for space reasons, but I've never seen it done.

I found a thesis from LSU on vertical burial as a proposal to help with overcrowding--maybe this will give you what you're looking for: http://etd.lsu.edu/docs/available/etd-01272004-163120/unrestricted/Bazzell_thesis.pdf#search=%22vertical%20burial%20overcrowded%20cemeteries%22

Most cultures bury their dead horizontally, but a few cultures in over-populated regions (like some areas in China) stand their dead upright when they bury them due to over-crowding at their cemetaries.

i think that people are buried horizontal because it would be kinda silly to bury someone upright.
