The have more similar ties than differences, but minor variations in how they implement those similarities.

Both parties believe in big govt, and high govt spending. Republicans achieve this through deficit spending; Democrats through high taxes.

Both parties believe in heavy govt regulation. Republicans prefer to regulation individuals and personal choices, and leave businesses alone; Democrats tend to regulate businesses more than people.

Both parties believe heavy govt subsidies and handouts. Republicans give the money to churches and corporations, while Democrats give more money through welfare and social programs.

Both parties are committed to remaining in power, and both of them abuse the political system to achieve this goal. Both slander and belittle the other side. Republicans do this in a more dismissive way, claiming to be dealing with bigger problems. Democrats tend to take a more direct attack role, and go after the Republicans.

Both parties have effectively shut out the moderate conservatives and liberals, and stopped working towards any moderate agendas. Both have abandoned the rule of law, Republicans overtly and blatantly, and Democrats by not fixing the problems.

It's important to understand that the terms Democrat and liberal are not synonymous, nor are the terms Republican and conservative. Nor should the above list be taken to apply to all individuals who may support these parties.

I am a Republican and and I believe:

That the money I make is mine. It is not the government's to take and do with as they please. Whether I make twenty thousand a year or twenty million a year, the government can only take as much as they need to to run the country and that's it.

That a man and a woman make a marriage and no other. I believe that if just anyone can get married, it invalidates marriage for everyone, and destroys families which will be the downfall of our Nation.

I, as a parent, I have the right to decide what is right for my children, not the government. I will decide what kind of school they will go to, college and church until they are adults.

I believe that freedom comes with responsibility, meaning, even if you can say something, it doesn't mean that you should.

I believe that all of us have personal responsibility. That society or how someone was raised is not excuse for breaking the law.

That the military is necessary to defend and police are necessary enforce the laws of our Nation.

I believe that political correctness, "diversity" and the like cause division of people instead of bringing them together as one Nation.

I believe that all people have a difference of opinion and we should respect each other in spite of it.

I believe that elected officials must be held to a high standard and should be held accountable for their actions, good or bad and suffer the consequences, if need be.

You'd have to ask a Lib about what they believe.

most people in the U.S. want similar things, but whenever a political party does something that violates those principles, they usually just blame it on the other one... like I just asked a question concerning helping out corporations and how this is not laissez-faire economics, someone said that democrats help out corporations. I was mainly referring to the republicans, but it IS true that they both do it. Which means really, they are both parties which go against the will of the people.

The problem is that there are good arguments for both sides. When you pick a side, you only hear the good arguments for that side, and dismiss the other side. Take abortion for example... if you're undecided, you'll usually agree with the following statements: it's wrong to raise a baby when you're not ready to. it's too much to expect people to be abstinent. abortion is not a form of birth control, it is wrong to arguably kill a baby for convenience. birth control doesn't always work, so abstinence is the only way to avoid unwanted pregnancy. etc. all good arguments, but once you've chosen a side, you tend to dismiss some and overemphasize the rest.

yes, there are some differences, but none of them are significant... until recently, I think the neocons are really taking the country in a new direction. sinking fast.

The way i was taught was the libertarians are economic conservatives while being social liberals. They don't want government controls on anything. That means less taxes or less regulation, allot like conservatives are. The other thing is that they believe the government shouldn't curtail freedoms like the ability for a woman to choose about abortion. Libertarians i know also believe in the legalization of Marijuana. They says that the "War on Drugs" has basically failed and it's created a massive expenditure of money and increased the power of the government to tell people what they can do with their bodies. So they basically don't fall into either category. The libertarians i know generally vote Republican because they vote their wallet, and republicans vote for less taxes which generally help them.

Historically there were clear differences. Democrats for more government regulations/programs and Republicans for less. Now the parties are more or less non existant except in name. Most people are split by their social values either liberal or conservative.

In a nutshell without being preachy about either:

Democrats believe that government is the answer to each and every problem.

Republicans believe in personal responsibility.

All of their policies stem from those beliefs.

WTF is up with that first answer? The republicans want to control your personal lives and the Dems want to give your money to social causes. The Dems want to save every twig and the Republicans would burn down the rain forest for a dollar.

Republicans are against abortions but for the death penalty. Lot's of differences.

Of course they do. Democrats tend to be more liberal. They usually are pro-choice and more involved in environmental issues. They believe in taxing big corporations rather the little guy. Most want to ban the death penalty.
Republicans tend to be more christian based, conservative, pro death penalty, against abortion, believe taxing big business less leads to cheaper products and more employment etc.

Why???
