i went to the vet the other day, for my rats, and he not only vaccinated both of them, which was not what was supposed to happen, i mean, they were both sick, only the other one could have recovered without assistance, anyway, i thought it was only going to cost $35, wich is what i told her, i said, one, not both, i filled out the form, and went in, the thing that gets me is i had a chance to stop the vet, but i didn't, which was a dumb dicision, and i regret ever going. because when we got back into the recepton aeria, i didnt have the money, the vet was really upset. i only had the $45 with me, and the bill was $190. so he talked him into letting us go and coming back later this week. only when i got to my house, my granma drove me down, and i being a minor, had to have an adult present. she said they we shouldnt pay, that he took advantage of a minor, which is kinda true because she wasnt in the vet's room. and im worried that the vet will call the police or something.

U being a minor, the vet was not smart to work on your pet (excluding emergencies)..
That said, when dealing with minors, he should have been nice and allowed u to pay as doable.

However, I would have held the pet till payment rendered myself.

MY question is, was the $190 explained as potential cost.
Otherwise he ripped u off.. A good vet knows the potential costs already..

I have worked in a vet clinic for 8 years now and I know for a fact there is no vaccination for rats. I would double check to see if the shot he gave wasnt an antibotic. Besides, no pet and I mean no pet would of been vaccinated if it was sick. That would make matters worse in the end and I cant see a vet doing that for any price. If you where told the cost was $35.00 Im thinking that was the Exam fee only and anything else would be cost on top of that. However if they quoted you the $35.00 then they can be out by 10% either higher of lower only and any clinic with ethics will run that way.
Anyone knows if you have a pet it will cost money at some point or another in there life. If you cant afford the needs then maybe you shouldn't have the pet until you can afford it.
As for your bill, services where rendered to you and yes you should pay for the service provided. You may want to talk to the vet again and let the vet know you where quoted a fee of $35.00 if they indeed did quote you that and that you where surprised to find it much higher then quoted. The vet and you should be able to reach an agreement of some kind. If you are the rats owner and the one responsiable for the care and needs of the rat then no your grandma doesnt have to be present. In the end it sounds as if your trying to get out of paying your bill. Be an responsiable pet owner and do the right thing.
No can call the police or even take your rat away for not paying your bill. However you may be band from that vets office and will not be able to recieve anymore services there. I know we make a list of those who have stiffed us and fax it to the other clinic's in town. Your name is posted and no clinic will see your pet.
Dont punish your pet.
Good Luck

Why did you take both rats to begin with if only one needed the attention? That indicates right there that you may have wanted both treated. I don't think this was a case of taking advantage of a minor but a case of misunderstanding and you were part of the cause of it.
I don't know legally what the laws are concerning this kind of thing so I can't say whether you have grounds or not. If your adult members of family were not present then they may not have a leg to stand on either. I don't think this is a police matter.
You can argue your point and if you feel you have been treated unfairly don't pay but they will turn the head of the house over to creditors and the only way to get out of it will be more costly then the paying the bill. Also, if you don't pay the bill they can reserve the right to not see your rats again.

I was recently charged $700 for a stray kitten that lived for less than a day - It seemed unethical of the vet to charge that amount, especially since he told us that it would be around $400 total...and that is IF it lived for 3 days. The $400 was to include the 3 day stay. I payed...but I am an adult. In your case, the vet needs to take a good look at his conscience.
I took 2 rats in about 6 years ago and my bill was about $60 - and that included medication.

Other people have already addressed the bulk of your story, so I won't repeat what they've said. The vet wouldn't call the police, but they may add late fees on every month that there's a balance on your account, and after a while, turn your account over to a collection agency (then they'd be working on getting the money out of you).

A minor can't enter into a contract so legally you don't have to pay.
Morally however you should work something out with the vet. I think
splitting the cost at $100 or so would be fair.

i had the same thing happen with my kitten, i went in for a routine check up and ended up leaving with over $200 worth of meds and ear mite meds i already had...i should have said no, but i didnt want to look like an irrisponsible pet owner...try a different vet and ask around! or have your gma sit in the room with you next time so someone can back you up...most vets will look for something wrong in an animal thats not serious and will cure itself just to make the extra buck...or try a vet that allows payment plans...they are getting easier to find

If you clearly told him what you wanted... which was only the one rat to be taken care of.... then no, you shouldnt have to pay, BUT you do need to go back up there and tell him or call him even and let him know that it is his own fault he didnt listen to you and that you arent going to pay for the services you didnt ask for. I do wonder though why if you only wanted 1 rat to be seen.... why did you bring both rats?

I feel for you I have 23 Rats. I med. them myself with herbs.
Doctors, Dentist and Vets, are uncaring people only in it for money.
We should have a revolution and shoot them all.
