I believe the little round flat things with a hole in the center are called washers because they were originally used to wash away contamination from rotating joints, or when made from felt and soaked in oil they were used to wash oil into the bearing surface.

Later they began to be used to spread out the force of fasteners over a larger area than just the head of the fastener, but the appearance was so similar to the that the name probably just stuck. Happens a lot in engineering circles.

But honestly, that is just a guess.

If I were you, I'd "Google" the word "washer." My expectation would be that a washer is called by that name because it washes something - dishwasher, clothes washer. Of course the exception would be the washer one places on a faucet, for example.

Washers as in machines that wash clothes are called so for that reason. But if your reffering to a washer you put under a bolt when attatching a screw i have no idea.

It comes from the french word vis which means screw or vise. vis or vas became vaser and eventually washer.

Perhaps I don't understand your question, but the logical answer would be because they wash things.
