Comparing area and volume is like comparing a flat piece of paper to a box. There are things called dimensions; these are how we express size and direction. One dimensional means just a line. Two dimensional is something that has both height and width (like a flat piece of notebook paper...but actually something completely flat...paper does have some thickness to it.) Three dimensional is something that has height, width, and depth, like the box. So, area is 2 dimensional and only considers one flat side of an object, something like a flat piece of paper, whereas volume is 3 dimensional and considers all the space within the sides...like the amount of something that you can put into the box. smile

area = 2D
volume = 3D

basically area denotes how large a certain area/space is in terms of X and Y. Whereas volume indicates how much that particular area can hold in terms of X,Y & Z
