yes WWW is a subdomain.
however, I can not think of anyone who did this. Although it is possible.

DNS records are setup to use the domain for example (yahoo.com)

So a website does not to be setup with a www
(however it's more rare to find that missing now)

The dns record for yahoo.com points to yahoo servers who then look up the provided subdomain.

yahoo.com will point to a folder on their harddrive.
the subdomain www will also point to the same folder. (hence why it doesn't look any different)

the mail subdomain does point to a different folder - hence the different site.

The "www" comes from the old days even before the web was popular. When setting up servers, companies would use "ftp", "gopher" or "telnet" ( like ftp.yahoo.com or telnet.yahoo.com) for their different servers. When the web came around, they used "www" for the web server. For a while, most web addresses would not work without the "www" but nowdays, almost every server is set up for the root (yahoo.com) and the "www" subdomain to be on the same server/server-group so the site will be accessible either way.

The www is a convention. If you are running a site, you can use it or not. You could also implement it as a subdomain or not. To the outside world all that matters is that the DNS servers provide an IP address to talk to.

i do no longer think of that there extremely is a internet site the place you will get your very own area call and is unfastened. domains generally fee a pair dollars a month. What you're inquiring for is in all probability far too a lot, so the two: a) you will would desire to shop on with a sub-area b) you will would desire to pay a pair money a month those are the only recommendations i will think of of. Sorry.
