I hear how people are so tight down there that they need to get cut open and I am not talking about a C section. Does it hurt? And if you do have a C section does that hurt?

An episiotomy (cut between vagina and rectum) should only be done in the case of fetal distress. It's better to risk the possibility of a tear than face the certainty of a cut.

Tears heal much better and, while more difficult to sew up for the doc, are easier to match things back up to where they used to be. (Think of putting a jigsaw puzzle with straight pieces together vs. putting one with unique pieces back together!) Tears are usually not as severe as a cut and may only involve skin and not muscle.

A cut will involve both skin and muscle. A cut may very well extend into a bigger tear since the perineum has been weaked by being cut. (Think of trying to tear a piece of fabric with your bare hands. When it is whole, it is nearly impossible to do. If you make a small cut in it and try to tear it, it will rip apart very easily.)

Do perineal massage during your pregnancy to help prepare yourself for the birth.

Talk to your caregiver about NOT doing an episiotomy unless there is fetal distress. Find out about using warm compresses and massage in labor to help you stretch. Consider having a waterbirth. DO NOT push flat on your back with your feet in stirrups as this position is more likely to make you tear or "need" to be cut. Squatting is a great position and will open up your pelvic outlet around 30% wider than other positions.

If you do get cut or tear, it will be during a contraction when you are pushing and you are not likely to notice it. The doc can give you a local if you want/need for an episiotomy and will definately give you one to sew you up later if stitches are needed.

I tore with my first but birthed over an intact perineum with babies #2 and #3.

Get some big thick maxi pads or some Poise pads and put a bottle of witch hazel. Squirt the witch hazel all over the pads and then freeze them. The cold will feel great and the witch hazel will help to heal you if you have any perineal damage post-partum.

Usually the doctor will let you rip unless it's very obvious the baby will not fit. Then they would cut you to help the head fit through, although I've heard the shot they give you to numb it hurts worse then the cutting part. The pressure from the babies head will be so strong it probably won't be very noticeable, especially not if you have an epideral. It hurts more afterwards when you are recovering and it is trying to heal then actually during the birth. Never had a C-section.

I had an episiotomy (cut) the first time and tore the second time. Neither time did I feel anything at the time. The days after were a total different story. That is when it hurts, especially when the stitches are pulled by the pad. YEE-OUCH!!! But, you are going to be sore down there for several days after birth anyway. The episiotomy is only a small part of it.

i never had an episiotmy (getting cut down there) i tore both times!!

Ive heard that tearing us better than getting cut as it heals quicker and better.

mine never hurt too much, i never had stitches with my first and did with the 2nd...although the stitches were agonising to get put in, it hurt alot less when having a pee afterwards. where as no stitches i dreaded going to the loo... and the reason i tore wasnt because i was so tight but it was because i had 9lb babies. so not all you hear is true.

if you are concerned then speak to a midwife or read pregnancy books. Everybody is different

They cut me...and I tore. Had well over 30 stitches. At the time it didn't hurt. Things were pretty sore for several weeks afterwords though.

Getting cut doesnt hurt you really dont feel it because you have a lot of pressure and csections take time to recover from.
