I think either will serve you well, and while it's great to know both, you can't really be a specialist in more than one of these fields at the same time. In my experience, I have worked in both software development and networking, and not only am I grateful for the dual skill set, but I can honestly say the more I learned about one, the more I appreciated the other.

My true passion is networking and that's how I've directed my career and training, but I will always be grateful for the years I spent as a programmer analyst. Your background is computer engineering, my undergratuate was electrical engineering and graduate was computer science, so I really could have gone either way, networking or software... and I'm glad I chose networking. I experienced both over a 5 to 7 year period but knew early on that networking was my specialty.

So only you can really decide which is best for you, as both are hot career tracks with promising futures. If you're not done with school yet, take elective in both and see which you are more successful with. If you're done with school, consider taking a graduate course in each to answer that same question. That's what I did, I completed 2 graduate courses in EE before I decided to go for computer science instead as it was more applicable to my I.T. career. Can't really say which is better, software eng or network eng as that is an apples to oranges comparison. Good luck with whichever you choose.

Depends upon your interests. I started in computing over 38 years ago in programming. I decided after a couple of years that that was not my area of interest and moved on to other career paths, even though I was pretty good at it.

I re-entered the field about 20 years ago, this time focused on networking and PCs. I could not be happier now with my career choice.

Depends on what you'll be doing as a software engineer. Stick with anything to do with networks and databases.

Depends on what you like to do. Both sides are good.
