The "1.44 MB" & 3½-inch HD floppy holding capacity 1440 Kilobytes were introduced 1987. :
The 1.44-megabyte floppy disk drives that use 3.5-inch diskettes have been around for about 15 years. At the time of their introduction, they seemed like a miracle -- they were smaller than the standard 5.25-inch disks, but they held more data!
Sony introduced their own small-format 90.0 × 94.0 mm disk, similar to the others but somewhat simpler in construction than the AmDisk. The first computer to use this format was the HP-150 of 1983
ZIP DRIVE :
They can hold 100 or 250 MB of data. Because they're relatively inexpensive and durable, they have become a popular media for backing up hard disks and for transporting large files.
The main thing that separates a Zip disk from a floppy disk is the magnetic coating used on the disk. On a Zip disk, the coating is much higher quality The higher quality coating means that a Zip disk read/write head can be significantly smaller than a floppy disk's (by a factor of 10 or so). The smaller head, combined with a head positioning mechanism similar to that used in a hard disk, means that a Zip drive can pack thousands of tracks per inch on the track surface. Zip drives also use a variable number of sectors per track to make the best use of disk space. All of these things combine to create a floppy disk that holds a huge amount of data!

Also, a Zip drive is only made by Iomega Corp. At the time of introduction is was a good form of portable storage in a small space, because the cartridges were not much bigger than a floppy.
But the cartridges were rather costly, the drives limited to only those particular kinds of cartridges.
The introduction of low cost cd burners tolled a death knell for zip drives. The hand, advantage of a zip drive is that the user is able lto save to the Zip drive as one would to a floppy or the hard drive, from directly in the application. With CDs, one has to set up a burning session, and have all files ready, etc.
So, yes to the last part of your question.
So, Zip drives and external storage devices are not quite yet dead.

Zip disks are an old technology that allowed you to store data on a disk about the size of a micro-diskette. You need the drive, the disks and the necessary drivers to use this. It's an obsolete technology and you'll probably have a difficult time finding the disks for these drives.

Zip - 100 MB or 250 MB but expensive
Floppy - 1.44 MB Cheap
But both are not reliable due to variable reasons. I recommend a CD burner / DVD burner with ReWritable media. Or in case a USB Flash drive
