What people? If anyone believes that the price has anything to do with the coming election, they are idiots. Prices aren't set by politicians. They aren't set by oil company executives. Oil is bid on in an open market, like an auction. And the people doing the bidding base their decisions on the expected available supply against the expected demand. And no, they don't make money only when the price goes up. They make money when it goes down too. So they don't care which way it goes.

The reason the prices are dropping now is because of real-world conditions, such as fewer hurricanes this year, refineries switching back to winter formulations which are cheaper, repair of last year's damage in the gulf, lower impact of the BP pipeline clusure in Prudhoe Bay than expected. These things are all having an effect.

And prices drop like this every year after the end of summer. People are not driving as much.

Whenever you are offered two explanations for something: a rational, naturalistic one, and a deranged, conspiratorial one involving shadowy, powerful figures operating behind the scenes, the rational one tends to be the correct one - My version of Occam's Razor.

Yes it is true. During the 2004 election it came out that Bush and CO made a secret deal with Saudis to keep the price of oil down unti lafter the election and thats exactly what happened. I read in the paper just two days ago how OPEC is watching falling oil prices and may decide to cut back production in early fall. Like when the election is. So enjoy it while you can.

Not true at all. If you look at a 25 year chart of crude oil prices on the nymex, you'll find every fall prices drop. This is due to the end of increased demand in the summer months. Once the heating oil market comes to life you'll see the price jump back up.

You may have heard this from conspiracy-minded left-wingers, but I have yet to see anyone prove a correlation between gas prices and elections. Just like Stephanie up there, who insists it's true without providing a credible source, or any source for that matter.
