The old cd rom works ok, but still it showed no D: Drive. I was going to install a CDburner, and windows cannot find the D; Drive. It doesnt show up in My Computer either. Do I have to reprogram the computer for it to recognize it? I know its there, the old cd rom plays cds and all that just fine, Im not quite sure what happened or how to fix it.

Let me get this straight: you want to install an additional burner (on top of the CD-Rom you've already got) but your system doesn't locate the D: drive? Okay.

First things first, you need to make sure that all your connections and power hook-ups are properly seated between the new drive and your motherboard. If either one is not properly connected, it can result in your new hardware not being detected. Also, double-check to see if your system isn't assigning another port to that piece, as it might be showing as an E:, F:, G: (etc) drive.

Once that's done, I'd just run the "install new hardware" program that's part of your Windows system, and let the software do the work for you.

If you have a friend who is tech knowledgeable, have them check it out for you, otherwise, maybe somebody you talk to all the time on the net can help you by doing a remote assistance, if you both have xp..
Either way, help from someone close to you is always a good thing, and those two ways will keep you from spending your hard earned money on a tech..

the only rationalization for that ought to be, you haven't any longer have been given any CD/DVD-ROM, it rather is unplugged interior your case(examine the ribbon cable and capacity) or it rather is malfunctioning, (Goto controlpanel, gadget, hardware, gadget supervisor and spot in the experience that your ROM gadget has a YellowExclamation mark with the help of it.) if that is so you should replace it.
