I would gage not so much by age but by how quiet he is on a normal basis. Also how he reacts to stimuli. To test his reaction to being in a movie theater, dim down the lights and put a movie on the tv really loud. See how he reacts. As he gets older you will gage it by how well he behaves and sits and talks and whatnot. Good luck to you and have fun :)

My daughter was 12 days old the first time whe went to the movie theater. I just made sure that I protected her little ears. The theaters are really loud so sit away from the speakers and still give him extra protecion over his ears. Try putting folded up blankets on either side of his head against his ears. Anything to cushion the blow to his ears. That is what I did with my daughter and she slept through the entire movie with out a peep. I must say that I would have gotten a sitter if I could have. That was the intention, but the sitter canceled at the last minute and I had promised my son that we would go to this movie on opening day since it's release date was announced several months earlier.

Movies are very unsanitary places. The bacteria breeding from all of the spilt food is incredible. A baby's immune system is not developed enough to expose it to every germ flying and crawling around in a movie theater. You have no idea what disease the person has who sat in your seat just before you or how clean they were. Salmonella and staff germ levels are even dangerous for adults. If you decide to get a sitter, make sure that you wash your hands before you handle your baby when you get home. It would also be a good idea to change your clothes.
Babies are cute but, people don't go to movies to hear babies cry. If you want to risk getting your baby sick, you can try it but, be prepared to consider others and leave if he's not quiet.
It's safer, better, and less expensive to rent movies until your child is old enough to enjoy it. When you decided to have a child, you decided to substantially change your life.

I realize that you need to get out--and it is expensive and often difficult to find a good babysitter.
But--babies do not belong in theatres. Going to the movies is becoming increasingly unpleasant--people talk, cell phones. I think it is because people look on the theatre as just a big TV screen.
I find movies on the big screen to be much more enjoyable then watching a DVD. You are surrounded by the whole expereince.
Having a crying baby there is just rude--and ruins the movie watching experience for everyone else.

Way too young! At least 4 years old. They need to be at an age where they can cognitively understand to be quite. And a movie is a long time to just sit there even for a 4 year old. Optimal beginning age would be 5. They have started school and understand structure and quite time.

It depends on your baby. I have a 3 and 4 year old that I still wouldn't take to the movies. They can't sit still long enough or be quiet long enough to let other people enjoy the movie. If your baby sleeps for long periods of time though, I'd say go for it.

Depending on the baby's disposition, you should be able to take him/her. I have a 4 month old as well. If I go I just sit in the back so that if there is an issue we can quickly leave before we disturb anyone else.
If you prepare properly you should be able to enjoy. Bring extra toys and bottles so you can occupy the Babe if things get fussy.

Where I live there's now a place where moms can take their babies to the movies and not even worry if they're crying or nursing or whatever - they show all sorts of movies and the only rule is you have to have a child to come in (its a special showing) and the child must be under one year of age. Check around where you are and you should be able to find such a place.

That poor babies ears are not developed enough to handle that. How about renting a movie? If you're dying to go to the theater, get a sitter.

Realistically, any age where the child is still communicating by crying is too young to take them to a theatre.
You can take your child if you wish, but do not be surprised - or angry - if the management either turns you away or else asks you to leave if your child begins crying.
