Umm I think that you should wait till you are fully off all drugs to have a baby!!

You should wait till you are clean for more than 12 days before you start planning to have children. You should also wait until you methadone treatment is over. If you are already pregnant you have to see a doctor ASAP because methadone may have side effects that can hurt your baby. You need to talk to a recovery counselor about your situation. Having a baby is a major decision and should not be taken lightly. All the decisions you make in your life will not only effect you but your child as well. You need to take more time to make sure you are clean maybe a year or 2. Just think what will happen if you relapse and you have a child. The state may find out you are on drugs and take your child away from you. Then the child may have to end up in and out of group and foster homes. That is not a good life for a child. A child needs a loving family. If this happens your child may end up hating you and never forgive you. You may never be able to be in your child's life again. If you want your child to have a happy healthly life that will not lead him/her to the path of drugs that you took, then you would wait and get your life together before you have kids.

I don't know if there are any specific studies on methadone and birth defects, etc.

But common sense is that you should not get pregnant if you are using most any drug. Methadone is a strong drug so it could have serious effects.

Also--it has only been 12 days you have been off heroin. And you are to be commended. But, this is not the time to have a baby. It is not fair to you or the baby. You should be well along in your recovery before taking on this added responsibility.

I think waiting would be the wisest thing you could do right now. You have been on methadone for 12 days which means what you have only stopped doing heroin about 13 days ago. Yeah I would wait, hope, and pray for a healthy baby.

Q: How does methadone work?

A: Methadone is an opiate agonist that has a series of actions similar to those of morphine and other narcotic
medications. In maintenance treatment, patients are given enough methadone to ward off opiate withdrawal
symptoms, but not enough to induce narcotic effects.

Q: Does methadone make patients "high" or interfere with normal functioning?

A: No. Used in proper doses in maintenance treatment, methadone does not create euphoria, sedation, or
analgesia. Methadone has no adverse effects on motor skills, mental capability, or employability.

Q: How long should methadone treatment last?

A: Generally, the length of time spent in treatment is positively related to treatment success. The duration of
treatment should be individually determined. Treatment should last for as long as the counselor, physician and
patient agree is appropriate.

Q: Is it safe to take methadone during pregnancy?

A: Yes. Methadone maintenance treatment during pregnancy does not impair the child's developmental and
cognitive functioning, and is the medically recommended course of treatment for most pregnant opiate-dependent
women. During all stages of pregnancy, methadone is much safer for the mother and baby than continued heroin
use.

Pregnancy

Compared to the risks associated with continued opioid use, the use of
methadone during pregnancy is safe for both the mother and the fetus. Studies
have shown there are no long-term negative effects on the fetus as a result of
the mother's involvement in a supervised course of methadone maintenance
treatment. As in the case of HIV/AIDS, expectant mothers should be accepted
into treatment immediately. Some of the advantages of methadone treatment
include: better prenatal care and nutrition, improved birth weight and decreased
infant mortality (15).

Ancillary and support services in the areas of prenatal, child-care and parenting
classes should be part of the treatment regimen for this group. Community
agencies like the local public health unit should be utilized and consulted to
assist in providing information to clients about these valuable programs.
Information on accessing housing, food, financial assistance and specialized
supplies for the baby such as furniture and clothing should be made available
to the mother and family members.

Methadone and other drugs may cause horrific birth defects. Get off the drugs totally before trying to get pregnant. Have the drugs totally fried your brain?

I hope you'll be responsible and wait. 2 months is hardly enough time to be emotionally or physically ready to face the changes that pregnancy will bring. You have to be serious about allow ing your body to fully detox before possibly endangering a fetus to residual effects from drug use. You might want to start taking vitamins and liver cleansing herbs.Drugs can stay hidden in the body tissues even though the urge to take them is long gone.If you can afford to see a nutrionist or acupuncturist then go to one. They'll help get your body back in good shape to support pregnancy.Good luck.

you're not having periods because of the stress your body was under while you were using heroin. You may be very skinny and lack sufficient body weight to sustain a period.

Please wait until you are stable. You don't want to be homeless with a baby in tow. Why would you want your fetus to ingest methodone? You're not thinking straight at all.

Take it one day at a time. Go to a addicts group or something
