Putting the university that you are at would help. At my univ., the papers for a few "general education classes" are kept until we graduate. For us, it includes math finals for Math 115 and 185, final papers for English 111 and 218, and I think a communication class paper.

It depends on the university's policy

It depends on the school. Some colleges tell instructors to keep papers for 7 years (most don't - it takes up too much space). Other schools ask instructors to hold on to papers for at least one semester. If your school has a portfolio program they will be kept at least until you graduate. If this is the case it is typically the student's responsibility to hold on to the papers, organize them and submit them towards the end of your degree program. Honestly though, if you are not submitting a paper as part of a portfolio they will be put in to a file cabinet never to see the light of day again. If your worried about professors looking over your papers for years to come and mocking them it won't happen. The average college professor teaches 4 - 5 classes with 40 students per class every semester. Typically there is just enough time to read and grade your work when it is submitted. If you still need to know ask your teacher or look it up in the college catalog. All policies need to be published.

Most schools have rules about how long unreturned papers must be kept - for us it is a month after the beginning of the following semester. After that, most things are shredded.

Yes, it certainly depends on the university. My university requires all academic papers and exams to be kept for at least one calendar year and some departments keep them for at least two.
