Loved it. Certainly has a good dig at the Roman Catholic Church.

"For all of [the Church's] history...it's tried to suppress and control every natural impulse. And when it can't control them, it cuts them out."

Very ambitious, so don't know if it could be done by a smaller company on a smaller stage.

Playbox Theatre Company, a youth stage group, will be performing an adaptation of His Dark Materials this year. The group will be using Nicholas Wright's script from the National Theatre. On a smaller scale than the NT epic production, Playbox are looking to:

"rekindle the imagination [with the plays]; so the show will use movement, aerial artistry, and some of the finest young actors aged 14-25 to grace the stage"

The NT production could NEVER be transferred as it was on the Olivier stage. The set pieces were huge and they made full use of the revolve and two levels of the centre section of the stage. A truly remarkable theatre experience. I loved every second of it and cried more than once!
It's quite special that it will never go on in that incarnation in any other theatre. I feel blessed to have witnessed the spectacle for myself in the way Philip Pullman was proud of!

It could be restaged IF the producing company was as big as the National, had a large budget and could guarantee press and ticket sales. A local community theater would never get licensed to do it.

I love the book, but I don't know how it would translate on to stage... How was it?
