I moved into this house that I heard had an illegal house hooked up to it - water, electricity, i think it used to be a garage they turned into a studio - and the landlord says that I need to change the PG&E into my name, but I don't want to get screwed and have to pay the back houses' electricity. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

well you can have the utility companies come out an check to see if they have hooked up illegally. the utility companies can not make you pay for any charges that occured while the utilities were not in your name. you will only be charged for the usage while it is in your name. check with you state housing athuority as far as your rights go. they should have a local office that you can visit.

Go to your city/state's web site and look for tenant/landlord rights with enough research you should find what your looking for.

you can take a copy of the lease with you to the utilities company and they will make sure that does not happen..
