Planning for future consists of many assumptions. If you assume you will live atleast to the age of 80, think how you want to leave this world at that age. If you think you should be having a big bunglow in the richest place of the city, a ferrari, etc.. then plan to get those so that you will have all these at that age. Think and plan how to get that much money.... This can be the longest time that you can plan for your life.
When planning, you should always be ready to accept the best and the worst possible outcome. You plan assuming you will live for 80 years and incase if you die even the next day you should be ready..... There can be many changes in the plan, sometimes even to the goal, but there should be some goal and a plan in the life....

Good question. It is important to plan one's life - we plan every grocery list, party menu and so on......so obviously we need to plan for life which is the timespan between one's birth and death. How far ahead one plans is determined by various factors in each one's life. I don't think there can be a general yardstick set.

What's more improtant than planning life, is to understand one's priorities and order of priorities as well, in life and focus on them at every decision. This will make it easier to plan.

Plan and save for the important things ahead; college, housing, and retirement. But don't sweat the small stuff, the little things seem to fall into place.

Through trial and tribulation I have discovered that it is useless to plan any farther than about ten minutes. Even then things don't usually go as planned.
