This seems like a tall order (relaxing and with a toddler?), but it's gotta be doable! Preferably with things that would interest both us and the kid and be within easy driving distance from San Diego, but far enough away that we feel like we're "getting away". (So no Sea World or Lego Land, please!)

How about this? Take the 5 freeway up to the East LA Interchange, get on the 101 Freeway heading north!!! Take the 101 to Santa Barbara, and get off at Cabrillo Blvd (the offramp will be to the left) Take Cabrillo Blvd to Stearns Wharf and have a nice meal at one of the restaurants, then get back onto the 101 and go up to El Capitan State Beach and Campground. Camp out for a couple of days...the campground is above the beach, but its less than a 5 minute walk down to the water.

Or take the 101 up to Solvang...Continue up the 101 to the 254..it will say "Solvang" on the exit ramp. Turn right and follow into Solvang. Its a neat little town and you can walk through the shops and stay in one of the hotels up there. There is alot to do along the coast.

Presumably with a toddler you don't want a long road trip so I won't recommend driving up the coast. What about driving South to Mexico. Beyond Tijuana, there is this hotel on the coast called Hotel Calafia. Stay there. Its scenic, prices are reasonable, food (assuming like Mexican) is great. Not a long drive and since you are in a different country, I am sure it will feel ike you have "gotten away"

Come up to Laguna Beach. Plenty of accommodations, eateries, shopping, art, surf and sand. At $3 a gallon, close enough to San Diego for a leisurely drive with a toddler. Be sure and bring your stroller. Also within a short drive to Disneyland or Knotts Berry Farm if you choose.

Check out the San Bernardino Mountains. You can take a boat ride on Lake Arrowhead, drive over the the Moonridge Zoo in Big Bear, go swimming in Lake Gregory and try the Malt Shop in Cedar Glen.

Los Angeles - visit LA County Fair in the Pomona Fair Ground. Visit the Getty Museum, which is free entry but you pay for parking.
San Diego - take a 2hr cruise around the harbor. Dine at The Fish Market and ask for ocean view seating. Shop around oldtown.

I dont know how far you are from a woodsy area. Every fall I book a weekend at a Bed and Breakfast up in New Ham,pshire. It's so cozy and nice. what about camping???? It doesnt have to be something that you have to spend all kinds of money on gear. Find a campground that has activities for kids and so on and so forth.

What about Catalina Island, you have to take a boat...so it seems far from home but isn't. They have a beach that you and your family can hang out at, glass bottom boat tour to see lots of neat fish, and some great shopping, restaurants, etc. You can take a tram tour to see the interior of the island where you will see Bison, bald eagles, and possibly foxes.
