SLIPKNOT the beatles were the best in a time when there was peace and love for each other in the 60's but now with crazy muslims, incompetent politians and climate change slipknot's sound fits the time we are living in. we are turning the planet into a living hell.

I'm almost certainly going to say New Order. This band is almost carved into the stone of our popular culture, both nationally, but also in their native Manchester.
Their music is unique and recognisable from the very first note to the last, and the combination of guitar with keyboard gives a sound which crosses the borders of rock, pop, punk, dance and synth, which not many bands can do easily. This is met with the clever, abstract and even comical lyrics of their work, lyrics which encapsulate emotional and social depressions which were rife in Manchester only up until now. Songs like Blue Monday are true pieces of genius, unique and almost cult-like.
Bernard Sumner is also a true hero of music. Originally the guitarist/keyboardist of Joy Division, he was forced into the lead singers position and took it with grace and was able to come out of the shadow of Ian Curtis' fame to become a star in his own right, even setting uo a second band, Electronic.
At a close second, I would nominate Depeche Mode. Again an iconic band of the New Romantic era, they were able to cast off the lightweight love songs and create music that was both simple but meaningful, such as People Are People about tolerance, or Precious, about relationship breakdown and divorce, and its aftereffects. Their music has also been able to evolve, from synthpop to synthrock and dance, which has created a career for the band stretching almost 30 years.
Dave Gahan is the central image of DM. He cast off the boyband image, evolved into a much more serious singer, survived both divorce, drink and drugs to become a star. Equally accomplished is Martin Gore, keyboardist and songwriter. His songs and writing skills, although reluctant at first, ensured Depeche Mode survived both the collapse of the New Romantics, and also their own personal lives, to be still around now. He has also sang occasionally, with a solo album. Many of DM's more recognisable tunes come from the publicity shy Andy 'Fletch' Fletcher, who, although not a natural musician, quietly designs unique and stunning keyboard and instrumental pieces, and also ensures much of the bands management work is done- 'the boring stuff no-one likes' as Dave Gahan puts it.
So even after 25 years they still remain as popular as ever. How many British bands can pack a stadium out for a concert??

Greenday are by far the best band. They have been around for around 15 years now and they're music is always about things that everyone can relate to from feeling depressed and drug issues to war. They always come up with a new individual sound with every album which ensures they never get old. Greenday ROCK!

Aerosmith!!!!! Still together after all these years, and in their original line-up. Smoked, drank, snorted, shot-up, and screwed everything they could get their hands on. Not only is nobody dead (yet) but they're still making awesome and relevant music.

Maybe it's an American rock n' roll thing. The guys in Motley Crue are also still alive and rockin'. All of the British bands have lost members and/or everyone is really old and decrepit (or insane like Ozzy).
