I did not take prenatal vitamins at all--my doctor never perscribe them to me...my baby is healthy. Therefore, I think you'll be fine skiping a day.

At this early stage in your pregnancy, I would certainly suggest that you deal with a little constipation and take your vitamins. However, I will tell you that late in pregnancy I know that if you are eating good diet that you can get by with not taking the vitamins everyday. When I was pregnant with my son (now 8 years) I caught a virus and could not keep anything down at all. My OB took me off the vitamins for two full weeks. Now when I was pregnant with my now 10 month old daughter, I forgot to take my vitamins about half the time. I was constiated for almost the entire pregnancy as well. And toward the end, she was so heavy sitting on my bowels that it was VERY painful to use the bathroom - when I even could. And yes, if you strain to potty, you can cause hemmoroids. I have suffered those as well. Not fun at all. I would definitely suggest that you eat lots of fiber - oatmeal, apples, leafy greens, etc.
Now, all that said, ultimately you should talk to your doctor about this. There are vitamins that do not have the iron in them (that is what I was on with my son). Or he may switch you to a lower dose of iron or a vitamin with a stool softener in it.
Good luck and congratulations Mom.

The reason that you cant poop is because the main vitamin in a prenatal is Iron, it will make you constipated. It wont do any harm to your baby but at the same time your baby is taking everything you have so in order to still feel half way okay is take those vitamins!!!!!!! If they make you ill or have some other effect like you mentioned, talk to your Dr. about and see if she can switch your vitamins. I am 35 weeks now and my prenatal vitamins have been switched 3 times already, now I just take Flinstone Vitamins along with Folic Acid and Iron pills. So dont feel bad you havent gotten to the bad part yet. Talk to your Dr. though she can help you better than us.

Skipping a day will not cause any damage to your child. The prenatals are meant to make sure your child gets all the nutrients they need (without leaving mom with none). My prenatals made me throw up everytime I took them. I ended up taking liquid vitamins, still threw those up, so they had me take Flintstones vitamins and folic acid separately.

Iron is normally what causes the constipation.Try taking a prenatal that does not contain Iron, then take your iron separately at a different time of day with a glass of orange juice. Make sure the orange juice is NOT calcium enriched since calcium blocks the absorption of iron. The vit C in the orange juice will help break down the iron in your system and we all know fruit and juice contain fiber that helps with BMs.

If that doesn't work then ask your doc about taking fiber tabs to soften your stool.

I have not taken prenatal vitamins with my pregnancies. They made me really sick... and extremely constipated. My doctor told me that as long as I was eating healthy enough to get enough nutrients for two that it was fine. I had a very healthy pregnancy and a very healthy baby the first time.. and I am having a healthy pregnancy now. But... just as a precaution I did take a folic acid supplement for the first trimester of both pregnancies.. It is very important that you get plenty of folic acid right now.. Keep eating healthy.. and talk to your doctor about it when you go in..She may just recommend a different brand that has less iron so you won't get constipated.. All women are different.

Congrats with the baby.

It's okay to miss prenatal vitamins, especially if you're eating healthy. That said, right now it's most important for you to have folic acid.. so you should at least take a pill of folic acid just to protect your unborn child from spina bifida etc..

I knew people who would get morning sickness if they took their prenatal vitamins, so they were told to stop.

If your bowel movements are the only thing affected, maybe you might want to increase your fibre intake... perhaps drinking a Metamucil type thing. Pregnancy in general can consipate some people, and this might have nothing to do with the prenatal vitamins. Just something to keep in mind. Do talk to your doctor though.

They make prenatal vitamins with citracel in them. They worked great for me in solving constipation. If you can stomach the prenatals, take them everyday while you can because there is probably going to come a time where you can't keep them down and then you're going to need the extra stores in your body. If you really don't want to take them, make sure you are taking extra folic acid on the off days.

It is normal for some women to experience constipation issues during pregnancy, however, I do believe you should take your prenatal vitamins everyday for a healthier baby. The pre-natal vitamins are the best thing for your baby right now. Luckily, I did not have constipation issues during pregnancy, I had to go every day, but I took my pre-natal vitamins everyday. Congratulations by the way and Good luck!!

talk to ur doctor about changing ur prenatal vitamin. the one ur taking probably has to much iron in it and its making u constipated. there are several types of prenatal vitamins and ur doctor can help u find the right one for u. and u need to take ur vitamins everyday. cause whether ur eatin the right foods or not the vitamins provide all the required vitamins and minerals the baby needs to deveop properly. skimming on them is taking away from ur baby not u!

women have been having babies LONG before prenatal pills were ever introduced. As long as you're being healthy and under the supervision of a doctor, you should be fine. by the way, congratulations :-)
