Sounds like you're talking central defenders. Overall, I like Gennaro Gattuso - defensive mid, second pick is Claude Makelele. Both of these guys are workhorses!

But ... let's look at central defenders. Nowadays, it's great to have a central defender who can score on set pieces, but that's an added plus. John Terry makes darn few mistakes, and can mark the best in the game. He also scores on set pieces. He'd certainly be at the top. Apart from scoring, In my mind, no one anticipates and positions himself better than Cannavaro, despite being shorter. I'm not a big Ferdinand fan. He's good, but I agree with Erickson - he could hustle more. I've always liked Sol Cambell and Paolo Maldini. Maldini a few years ago would be number one, but he's a bit slower now.

Sort version - defensive mid: Gattuso, Central defender: Terry.

You have to eliminate Terry(forward)
I think Ayala(from Argentina, Valencia), Lucio(from Brazil, Berder Bremen), (saynol, from France, Olympe)

seems like everyone as always has forgotten jamie carragher. I know everyone attributes liverpools campions league triumph to luck and Gerrard being awesome but lets not forget how amazing Cara was and always is. The mans a gnikcuf hero! left/right or centre back oh and midfield too

Hmmmm good question.

For my choice I like Terry. hes as solid as they come and he has been known to get a crucial goal or two. I also like how he goes forward, he can even play as a centre forward if its needed.

The one and only Ashley cole. He saves England from several blushes... and he will do the same for Chelsea. He's the only one who can stop Eto and Ronaldhino.
