Why can't Mothers and Fathers who work hard have a chance to be with their new borns and be PAID duirng that time? has anyone ever had to have a child and rush back to work to pay the bills? it's just not right, the "greatest" country in the world is the WORST when it comes to FAMILY and the companies are just as greedy and bad for not paying Mothers to be off for the 12 weeks the Federal government allows under family leave act!

My company pays for maternity leave only to the extent that you have vacation saved up. AND it caps vacation accrual at two years worth, which is 4 weeks for me. If I want any longer, I have to save up ahead of time to supplement my income. Politicians yammer about family values but I question what that means in a country that clearly doesn't value family enough to allow parents a reasonable amount of time off with an infant without going broke.

I agree. I saved up my time for 3 months and had to take some w/o pay for about 1. And let me tell you it was tuff that last month. I guess they know how hard we work and all the hours we put in. You'd think they would be thankful for us having another tax paying citizen. I don't get it either!

It's a tough call, but mainly because the other people at work resent paying for someone else's life choices.

If one worker does not have a child and has to do extra work and earn less because a co-worker has several, is that fair?

Perhaps people who have to "rush back to pay bills" should postpone childbearing until in a better financial situation?

Reproducing is a choice that you make. The shareholders of the company should not be asked to be responsible to support choice of adding to your family.

You'll be surprised that in many developing countries, the rules are even stricter. In China, they have strong laws against having multiple children

Just another lame excuse to get off of work. People are becoming less productive and they want more for doing less. Quit making babies - we have enough already.
