The check is addressed to me, with the company name on it. I'm not planning on destroying the thing, just picking the lock...Come on! There's gotta be some theives around here somewhere?

Don't listen to those goody goody fu*k's, Just grab a hammer or crow-bar and smash the sh!t out of it, Or have one of your friends do it. It's not mail fraud if its addressed to you.
Or you could wait for the mail Carrier to deliver the mail, and ask them for it.

If you need gas to go anywhere how will a check help you? Gas stations take cash or credit cards.

you cant. it is illegal, a violation of federal law even if it is your check because you are breaking in to someone else's mailbox.

borrow the money from a co-worker or you it will cost you more in fines and repair from your vandalism than is probably on your check.
