Make sure they work. Ask about any little quirks the machines might have. Run a cycle and make sure they don't have any squeals in them: If they do, they're on their last legs and could give out at any moment.
Good luck!

They are going to make sure that you can't try these first!
I would shop the market for new ones because some new are sold around 100.00 each but at least they work, and you won't see your "whites" turn gray from the filth that can't be seen between the washer walls.
Ask Home Stores, for end of year models. Like cars, they need to clear the inventory for the newer models that are sold as "new", but never washed or dried a single item! Working with a few dents or scratches is better than not working at all.

Run a cycle of water through the washer and listen for any odd sounds. Like is the tub off balance? Does the tub or any part of it leak?
Turn on the dryer and do the same. Are there any odd sounds. Does it heat well?
Any damage to the outside?
Ask why they're selling them.

also turn the dryer to the highest heat setting and throw in a towel. start it up and after a lil while 10 minutes or so take the towel out and see if its warm. For the washer not sure beside trying it out to make sure it spins, drains right ect.

Ask them if they will let the washer go through a spin cycle to see if it will drain with no leaks. turn on dryer let it run a few minutes and open door to see if it is warm inside. you have a better than average chance of getting something that is in still good shape Maytag,Kenmore National brands like that last forever

Hard to tell. Look to see if the outside has been abused. Check lint filter in dryer to see how full it is. If it is jammed full, that tells you they don't empty it often. Check the cycles on the washer to see if they all work,,,fill, spin, rinse, spin. Not much else to look at. It's hard to buy used appliances, you never know for sure what you're getting. Good Luck!!!

We are going to be selling our washer and dryer, too, and I'm glad I stumbled on this question. We won't be in a position to show them a test cycle because we'll have nowhere to install them, but we can at least assure them that if they don't work they can bring them back for a refund.

Whirlpool is a good brand. They should last @ 10 years.I would find out how old they are first.Ask if you can see them work,(If they say they work) If they do not work,do not hassle it.Go to an Aplliance Repair store and see what used appliances they have.At least you know it was fixed and they should have no problem showing you it works.

Try to see both of them go through an entire cycle before purchase. Otherwise, I would stay away.

Yes, you really do need to test them before buying. I know it's inconvenient, but think of how much worse it would be iff you moved them to your place and then found out one or both didn't work.
