I have family members that got a trailer that falls apart to live in but as far as compensation a $2000 gift card for a family of 4 is nothing compared to the millions I see the "9/11 widows" spending on tv.

Well where do we start? As a life long resident of New Orleans, I cannot belive my ears, but thats ok, the world is full of scumbags. One little fact that remains to be told is that over 30% of all of this nations oil is either produced or refined in Louisiana and goes through the port, we produce even a larger portion of natural gas for the nation, The port of new orleans is the largest in the Western Hemisphere, and on top of that new gas reserves were found off the coast of Louisiana, this is big, its a 50 year find, much more than alaska, america needs louisiana much more than we need the U.S. The new deals are being worked out right now in washington for our oil royalties. This was not 9/11, A MAJOR CITY was destroyed in this country, a city that is the most unique, one of the most historical and oldest cities in this country, this country would not be the same without New Olreans nor the louisiana purchase. We work hard and have always payed our fair share of taxes like EVERYONE ELSE
and we deserve equal treatment, thoes levees, canals and pumping system were designed, built and implemented by the U.S. GOVERNMENT, New Orleans flooded because our Federal Levee protection system failed. And anyone who pulls out building below sea level is stupid, then what about Miami? San Franciso? Oakland? God forbid if the big one hits San Fran will people ask San franciscans to move the city, I think not........ Most of the comments here are just flat out heartless, but hey another idea is being thrown around here in Louisiana, we can Cede from the U.S. and just outright sell you our oil and natural gas and tax all river traffic. I for one am proud to be from MY city, unlike any other in the world. If anyone wants to debate this further, step up to the plate. And to everyone who wishes us well God Bless You.

I agree with grognd. You are so like many people who believe the TV. Do your research before you posts unfounded material like this in public. Don't believe what the media is telling you. Those "poor" people have been compensated and to be honest, most of them are better off than what they were before. They have received more money for their housing and damages than what they make or get from the government in a year. The people that are stating that they haven't received any money probably haven't submitted proper documentation, abided by guidelines, or just don’t qualify. I can go on and on but the fact of the matter is the media only wants the government to continue to be faultful and do not want to show what good has been done to get these ppl back on their feet and in habitable conditions. Not to mention when they do give them money, they complain for more or complain about the accommodations they have received such as a travel trailer. The government has made adjustments as well as made accommodations to the victims of Katrina far beyond traditional assistance that is overlooked by the media and the public. I am talking about extreme adjustments and accommodations that were not given to the victims of 9-11. One of them was the $2000 debit cards which have NEVER been done in a federally declared disaster and especially with a debit card. Most of that went to waste and will never be implemented again because of fraudulent use and improper use but how much time was spent talking about the improper usage of these cards? Zero to none. Instead you hear of what the government HASNT done for these people. Furthermore, it has been a year. If there hasn’t been assistance issued, then chances are you wont receiving assistance. It's time to begin to pick up the pieces alone with the help of a job. Government reliance should not be the root of your goals to rebuilding your life. Government assistance is a privilege, not a right which most of these Katrina victims think as well as feel. What would these ppl do if their parish/county wasn't declared a federal disaster? How else would they make ends meet? How else would they find shelter? Again, I am referring to the assistance post-Katrina. Response during the wake of the storm is a different topic. I suggest you turn off the TV and stop listening to hear-say and if your family is living in a travel trailer, it's better than the street isnt it? Where would they be without it? And if they are still living in it after a year, chances are they have no where else to go. Your urban family should know above others that life isnt fair. Don't compare yourself to others. Stop relying on the governement and work. Maybe then they will not have to live in the "run-down" trailer. If housing is terrible get an apartment or a decent house and turn the trailer in. Come on, stop the complaining.....

What are you talking about? Those so called victims have gained quite a bit. I don't think I can even list what people did to bend over backwards to help these people, not to mention the monies given to them by the government to help them find a place to live, food etc. And what did they buy? X-Boxes, TVs, Porn, Lap dances and the waste goes on and on.

After a year, the 'victims' who are worth a damn have already moved elsewhere and carved themselves out a new life, new jobs, whatever they needed to do to get things back to normal for them. Yes, it was a tragedy, but the aforementioned people didn't sit around crying because FEMA wouldn't buy them a new big screen TV, or give them money for stripclubs.

The urban trash are still carving out a 'living' in New Orleans (or Atlanta, or Houston ghettos turning those areas into bigger cesspools than they were to begin with) living in abandoned cars, rent free apartments, donated housing, and FEMA trailers, crying about how no-one will give them any damn money so they can continue to sit on their arses, popping out kids, doing drugs or otherwise being a blight on society.

Oh and yes, 9/11 and Katrina are the same thing, aren't they. Next thing you'll be telling me is that Mother Nature is part of the SS.

Sounds like your family members need to quit living off the government's dime and learn to take care of themselves. Maybe getting a job is a start.

So tired of hearing the whining.

Gotten nothing?

This is another silly "Yahoo Answers" question.

The United States Coast Guard rescued thousands of people immediately after Katrina hit. That's the government helping people.

My home town Fire Department and Public Works Department sent 50 people that rescued survivors from their houses and coordinated building inspections to flag dangerous dwellings. That's the government helping people.

The Army Corps of Engineers studied the levees, corrected mistakes, re-designed new levees, and is re-building the levees. That's the government helping people.

Thousands of residents of New Orleans and surrounding areas were evacuated from the hardest hit areas on buses and temporarily housed by various federal agencies. That's the government helping people.

Through our taxes, we are helping to rebuild New Orleans so that people can return to live in a city that is below sea level in a zone where hurricanes happen periodically. You and I are the government helping our fellow citizens.

C'mon people - think critically. I didn't even vote for the Prez, but I can think rationally enough to constructively criticize and hand out kudos at the same time.

Think.

i am sure there r exceptions to this but: 1. too many are not helping themselves.. 2. many that have been taken in have taken advantage or worse.. 3. if everyone able to work had been working before katrina it would not be difficult to know who the truly needed are.. 4. i would imagine most of the 9/11 victims worked for companies who compensated them.. 5. after katrina we watched daily on tv the "needy" stealing tvs, beer and cigs. (food and water would have been accepted) need i go on?

i personally truly wish this were not the case and we would all want to do everything we could to help as many have .

I helped load 2 semis here in Souther WI with donations for Katrina victims. People also made huge donations of cash, and opened their homes, etc.

Katrina was a natural disaster, 9/11 was an attack. See the difference?

So please do not say Katrina victims have "gotten nothing" because they have in fact recieved a great deal.

Also don't forget the $2,000 debit cards they blew on ridiculous items.

Are you in Louisiana or from Louisiana? Initially Katrina Victims got the FEMA money for 2000.00 but now victims of Katrina and Rita can get funding to build a house up to 150,000, it is called "road2home" for Louisiana residents. The governor just stated yesterday about the program. You may want to check it out. Although we didn't lose our house in Hurricane Rita which everybody has seemed to ignore, we had alot of damage and didn't get any FEMA money! Now, I am not a supporter of our Governor but I think this program may be good.

Umm, I must have missed something. Was Katrina a muslim terrorist storm? Just kidding, we should do everything in our power to build everyone in New Orleans a new home. The kind of house trailers 15 million working families live in is certainly not good enough for them!

It was awful. But plenty of folks tried to help you. Those who are able need to stop whining and playing the victim and get out and get jobs. Besides, most our tax dollars are going to support the war effort ( which I don't agree with) The govt. can only do so much for so many. There are limits, you know. And of course lots of scamming the system has gone on. I have no sympathy for the scammers, none at all.

I think theyve gotten enough of a hand out now its time for them to go to work.
also 9/11 was not a natural disaster, and the govt does take responsibility for putting its citizens in harms way. most of the katrina victims have been milking the system for years before anyway.
