The government drug tests military personnel, employees, and law enforcement agents. I can't figure why they wouldn't drug test individuals that are getting free money while they drug test hard working people.

Poor people unfortunately are stuck in a vicious cycle. This cycle is passed down from generation to generation, with a few managing to "move up in the world". Unfortunately the vast majority of the impoverish stay poor for the rest of their lives. For various reasons, such as: lack of a proper education (yes it's provided free by the govt. But have you seen the public schools in the inner city?), cramp dirty etc.. living conditions, violence, etc...

Under these conditions people lose their spirit. Drugs are a form of escapism. A break from the overwhelming obstacles that life has dealt them.

To answer your question, in my opinion I believe that the goverment doesnt drug test because it wouldn't be beneficial to society. Just think about it for a moment, if you take away the welfare checks and other forms of aid/enslavement from the drug using recipients (not all are junkies) they would resort to violence and other means which are detrimental to society in order to obtain their drugs.

Offer assistance in the form of rehab centers to those who want it, and throw a few scraps to the others.

Just my opinion.

It might seem like a good idea, but it probably isn't done because of the privacy issues mentioned above (or at least that may be the reason given). I think (and only of opinion) the real reason is because the cost would be substantially more to perform all the drug tests than it would to just give out the money to the few that are using it to buy drugs.

That's only a select few individuals, and they are all in the employ of the government. Welfare people who are employed tend to work in low income corporate jobs that also drug test, so that's rather redundant to waste funds on testing twice. The ones who are unemployed only receive welfare for a short time before it is cut off. They must make attempts to seek gainful employment or lose their welfare status, and that means staying clean.

What I'm curious about is why there is no drug testing for holding political office as I'm less worried about a soldier who's a bit doped up as at worst he'll maybe kill or injure a few people while the results of a doped up Senator or Governor can have widespread and long lasting effects that affect a far more populous group.

I don't think the government should have a right to drug test anyone, but if drug testing just has to be mandatory, then it should definately be welfare recipients who get tested.

Because the recipients would say it is a violation of their personal freedom or something to that effect. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for helping out when things get tough. But I was standing in a grocery store one time and this lady was there and someone walked up to her and asked if she was expecting again, she said, "Yes, that'll be at least $100 more added to my Welfare check." I'm not kidding. The system we have in place doesn't work because of people like that woman who take advantage of it.

unfavorable human beings regrettably are caught in a vicious cycle. This cycle is handed down from era to era, with some handling to "circulate up interior the international". regrettably the popular public of the impoverish stay unfavorable for the remainder of their lives. for countless motives, which incorporate: loss of a appropriate training (particular that is presented loose by ability of the govt. yet have you ever considered the popular public faculties interior the internal city?), cramp grimy etc.. living circumstances, violence, etc... decrease than those circumstances human beings lose their spirit. drugs are a form of escapism. Trouble is that it's not good PR to turn away anyone from welfare, no matter how useless the person is. Welfare is supposedly for starving moms who need to feed & shelter their kids, and they would start a riot if they had to do anything to get their check.

Why aren't we asking them to do the absolute minimum to improve themselves, for example taking 1 GED class per semester until they get a highschool diploma?

I agree it is unfair. There's alot about the Welfare/foodstamp system that isn't right.

Questions for you...What do you think they should do with the ones that come up positive? Do you mind spending your tax dollars on all these drug tests? Are you willing to pay, with your tax dollars, all the new rehabs that may have to be built to rehabilitate? Are you willing to spend your tax dollars on the muti-million dollar lawsuit that will be filed with the Supreme Court to defend privacy rights of well fare recipients? (oh let me guess you don't think poor people should have rights.)

Maybe these questions will help anwer your question.

I so agree with your question, I bet there is a lot people on drugs who are on welfare. I think if they are on drugs they should not get any help.
