Were the immortals and their customs in Highlander acknowledged as being based on anything in mythology? Are there probable or plausible mythical bases for the characters and their customs?

I haven't seen anything in particular; however, there could be an argument made in a comparison between the Highlander characters and some of our greek myths. After all, the immortals live on a level above the rest of society but continue to walk among them. Much as the Greek Gods and Goddesses. Also, the Greek Gods and Goddesses had their own spats and fights for power much like the immortals.

I heard it was actually based on folklore either in Ireland or Scotland.
