I SELL THESE CARS THEY HAVE A SEALED FOR LIFE TRANSMISSION ALONG WITH THE SATURN ION THEY ARE BASICALLY THE SAME CAR. BUT THE ECOTEC ENGINE IN THIS CAR NEEDS VERY LITTLE MAINTENANCE.

I'm assuming it's a manual. If so the tranny uses "gear Lube" and it is filled from a plug in the side of the transmission from underneath the vehicle. It probably needs to be changed about every 50K miles and it should never "need" any. It should be full when drained and filled back up without any leaking. In order to check it you would remove the "fill" plug and put your finger in the hole. The lube should be level with the bottom of the fill plug hole. Essentially you fill till a little starts coming back out and your there.
BTW the gear lube is much higher viscosity (thicker) than motor oil. It also smells bad and the smell is hard to get off your hands so be ready for that. It probably tastes bad too.

I stand corrected: sealed for life. Unfortunately that means that "life" will be significantly shorter. Why cant gm find thier way out of the toilet? because they keep building cars that last 5years and get thrown away. A sealed transmission doesn't make sense. As oil heats air pressure will build and cooling will create a vaccuum. Air must pass in and out of the case or it the pressure will cause the seals to leak. It must therefore have some type of air transfer. This will necessarily bring in both contaminants and moisture. The contaminants and moisture will eventually cause wear and damage to the transmission. Fluids are changed for a reason.

It's ideas like this that keep GM vehicles right next to Ford in the lowest resale value catagory. That's not opinion, its fact. I hope you have good luck with your tranny, but I'm sorry you couldn't afford to an civic or corolla.

Yes look in the owners manual some must go to the dealer Like some VW's & BMW's, it should not need anything its to new of a vehicle , if its stick shift there will be no dipstick, its under the vehicle on the side of the trans, if an auto look in the owners manual it may not be acceable to you only a mechanic & or dealer, sealed for life type, like the maintance free battery and remember all battery need maintance so its a GM marketing ploy when it fails you must go to the dealer Buy a FORD First On Race Day

The good news is that it is sealed for life so you don't have to do anything with it.

The bad news is that being a Chevy Cobalt, life is about 2 years.

Yes this should have a sealed for life trans (if auto, uses dexron III/mercon)

I would not however just think its fine to not have it changed...... it can still be changed (the fluid and filter) its the best thing to do, to get alot more life out of the trans...., they just did the sealed for life deal, because most never either check or change it..... or trade em in way before 100,000 miles.

check your owners manual, or just take it to a quick lube place and ask them to check it but yes if your car has an automatic transmission it contains hydralic fluid or as you called it Transmission oil

I guess your trying to check the oil on your transmittion. you don't have to, they don't have a dip stick. if you're leaking fluid or there is something wrong with your tranny, you should take it to your local dealer. other wise you should be ok. remember that tranny service is made every 30,000 miles.
