I've read stories where they mention a hand or finger sign that wards off the evil eye. What is that?

Why do questions always have typos? Argh. WARD off....

I don't need to ward it off - I'm just wondering what it is you do with your hands to ward it off. Or what people did back in the 1800-1900's when superstition was rampant.

The hand sign to ward off the "evil eye" is , I believe, (I could be wrong) Italian in origin, You make the sign of the "horns" (yes, just like at '80's rock concerts) and spit between the extended fingers.

The cornuto:
a hand gesture in which the index and little fingers are extended while the middle and ring fingers are curled into the palm.

The mano cornuto is an amulet . Mano means "hand" and corno means "horn." The reference is to the horned head of an animal.
the amulet is a figure of the hand making the warding off gesture.
the purpose is to turn the evil eye. to make it look away by threatening it with the horns and blinding it with the shiny silver.

Behind the stries you call superstitious ,is always some truth. I wear a clove of garlic tied to a strand of rose, mary to ward off evil entities. I also have seashells and rocks at the front entrance to my house to ward off evil! I sleep with my head to the East as this is a power point in the cosmos. I pray before I step out of my house and always give thanks for my life and offer prayers to the Earth and all its creatures, leaving red ribbons tied around trees, pouring corn-meal on the ground and planting a herb garden for the fairies.

The sign is a palm with extended fingers, it is used to "stop" evil eye.
Other ways I know of warding off evil eye are:
Get someone to give you (it has to be a gift) a charm in the shape of a blue eye (I'm sure you have seen them somewhere) and wear it on a bracelet, when it falls it means that its protective effects have worn off.
If you know of someone who has a heavy vibe or negative vibe let them pat you or touch them, that way you wont be affected by the evil eye.

I am not sure how to ward it off, but in Latin American cultures, it is called Ojos. If you get Ojo, the cure is to put a raw egg in a glass of water under your bed. If you have Ojo, when you get up, the egg will be cooked in the glass, and your Ojo gone.

I've heard some cultures put a dot on the forehead to misdirect "the evil eye". That's the extent of my "evil eye" knowledge.
