People usually move either (1) towards opportunity or (2) away from fear.

Examples of (1)
A. The largescale immigration into the US and to a lesser extent Australia, Canada and Brazil after 1800 to now, by people perceiving the target new world country as offering e.g. free land or a favourable economic environment for enterprise.

B. Migration of Germanic peoples from east of the Rhine into Gaul and Britain during approx AD350 to 550, by people using piracy, plunder and military conquest to transfer to themselves the greater wealth observed in the targeted parts of the Roman Empire.

C. Local migration towards prospering cities and away from rural or disadvantaged areas, e.g. towards Manchester and Birmingham (UK) during the Industrial Revolution and towards Mumbai and Bangalore (India) today.

Examples of 2) are of course all too abundant e.g. Jews out of Germany and Europe generally in the 1930s; Asians out of E Africa in the late 1960s and early '70s; Bosnian Serbs and Muslims each out of areas controlled by the other group during the conflict there in the 1990s.

Another kind of example of 2) is old people moving to be nearer to younger members of their families. Whereas old people moving from the snowbelt to the sunbelt (in the US and in W Europe nowadays) is an example of 1).
