The Intel core 2 duo processors seem to be winning the race right now, both in terms of being faster and also using up less power (which might also make them quieter). I've always been an AMD boy myself, but I could be swayed now.
Go to Tom's Hardware and see the comparisons between the CPUs you're thinking over: http://tomshardware.co.uk/cpu/charts.html . You can compare performance on activities that you would normally use your computer for (e.g. ripping songs in iTunes, etc).

Dual core processors produce twice as much heat as a single core processor,so their life span is shorter,the AMD is just the same as the Intel the only difference is the cost of the intel as oposed to the cost of the Amd both do the same multi tasking as they where designed for

Well, the newest Core Duo might be 1-2% faster but AMD rules the high-end CPU market and it is extremely cost-effective. If you like better watchng the "intel inside" sticker on your case, than take intel. Basically AMD is more like game-CPU while intel are more movie creation/intese office applications CPUs. It depends on your needs.
So, listen to your heart :)

AMD is more forgiving when a processing problem occurrs. Intel cannot tolerate processing errors. But either one works fine - look at the overall PC package to make your decision.

Intel are far and away more superior than AMD. AMD are far and away cheaper.
