The practical application of psychology is more an art. Science is the tool that helps us learn about the workings of the mind and it's association with emotion. The "art" is putting that information to work to help the client/patient understand himself/herself thus to aid them in coming up with viable coping strategies. Psychology can't give us precise, cookie-cutter solutions to all life's difficulties or even to our own difficulties. It helps give direction, not cures.

Interesting question. The fact is, psychology today is a science and no longer the Psychology of the ancient Greeks who initially coined the term.
What is now called "behavioral psychology" is an exercise entirely limited to the left-hemisphere of the brain, and all about thinking about things which have little or nothing to do with the whole of Man.
I suppose a scientist, or someone who denies and ignores two-thirds of Man would say that since psychology today also denies and ignores two-thirds of Man, it qualifies to be called a science.

Psychology is a science because it is the study of the human brain, not only the neurological aspects but the specific triggers in the human brain to illicit various responses. The reaction to medications on the brain, the reason various chemical imbalances occur, who and why certain individuals develop neurological disorders and what is the study of the mind (thought processes and why we think this way) and so on. The science of psychology is just as complicated as learning the human body to become a doctor which is why you need a doctorate (medical license) to practice both.

Behavioral Psychology is a true science because it utilizes the scientific method. When most people think of psychology, they may think of Freud and thus they may think that psychology is purely speculation, wild theories, and sex drives! But the Behaviorists, particularly in the 1950's and 1960's with Watson & Skinner, began psychology down a path that has led to it utilizing scientific methods, such as using control groups, testing hypotheses, collecting and analyzing data and reporting findings that are statistically significant.

The thing that makes psychology a science is the person who is practicing or studying it. If the person uses logical methods and incorporates the scientific method into their work, then it is a science. Psychology has struggled to develop as a reputable field of study, in my opinion, because of the people who have not treated it as an objective science.

the very definition of psychology!
Psychology is definied as the systematic study of human behaviour and thought processes. Psychology also refers to the application of such knowledge to various spheres of human activity, including problems of individuals' daily lives and the treatment of mental illness.
Further to make psychology more objective and to remove subjective factors we have the systematic research methods like experiments, observation, etc...

i guess because they set up controlled studies with hypothesis using the scientific method. Like they submit their human subjects to different conditions or tests and measure the results and calculate statistics on the results then publish it in journals. To try to learn to predict how humans will act. Sort of like physicists do with particles.
