In Windows, there are almost always four ways to do the same thing. This is one of them. Here's a relatively easy way, and it is based on having that item in your start menu. If it's in your start menu, use this idea. If it's not.... move on.

Click start, (then click on [all] programs), get to the item in the menu, but don't click on it.

Your mouse has two buttons. Using the button on the right of the mouse, click on the item in the start menu (this would be the item that usually starts the service or program you want).

Once you right-click on that item, a menu pops up. With the LEFT button, click copy. Do not start the program!.

Now click anywhere on the screen [this gets rid of the menu that's still there] , but don't click the menu!. Now go to your desktop, and put the mouse pointer where you want it. Right click in that piece of blank space on the desktop, and click paste.

You are done.

For an additional trick, you can right click on that item on the desk top, and click rename and rename it to what you like.

to create an icon on the desktop for programs and applications
there are a couple places you can go in your pc. 1st click start-all programs-when you are in all programs you will see folders for some programs you have on your pc. move the mouse over any of the folders or programs you want on your desktop. when you move the mouse over them the folders will expand so you can see the contents. when you see the contents move the mouse to the icon that you would click on to open the application. right click on it then click on send to then click on desktop shortcut. there is another place you can go to get program icons. go into my computer-then into the c:-then program files (it may or may not ask you if you want to display the contents of this folder if it does say yes)-once you are in look at all the folders if any of them are a program you want on your desktop go into that folder and do the same right click process i showed you before. that should do it.
good luck

Define Services? Generally you can right-click on something (start menu, etc) and select create shortcut which *should* put a shortcut on your desktop.
