1. a person who refuses allegiance to, resists, or rises in arms against the government or ruler of his or her country.
2. a person who resists any authority, control, or tradition.
The American revolution was fought over taxation without representation.
Breaking away from the British government was pretty much a concensus so pretty much everyone was a rebel unless they were loyal to the crown of England. Since I have a family history of rebellion, including that one of my ancestors did not have the permission of the King of England to come to America, (I guess that makes me an illegal alien now) I probably would have been a rebel. Now I would rather be repatriated to England with the current state of the world...

I'd probably have no choice even though I'd be a conscientious objector.
