I went to the hospital at 36 weeks in false labor. That was the last time that an internal exam was done. I was 1 cm and 25% effaced. Since then, I have had 4 prenatal appointments. I am 39 weeks and 5 days. Is it normal to not have your cervix checked at all this late? This is my second child but I delivered at 36 weeks for my first.

Thank you for the answers. I have asked the ob and she did not really give me a clear answer. I am relieved to know that it is fairly normal.

it is normal.. they know you are progressing.. but they arent worried.. they probably dont want to cause you any undue pain or stress.. checking the cervix is not pleasant. :) hang in there

Yes, not having an internal exam during these visits is not unusual nowadays.

Different doctors have different protocols for prenatal exams. The "old school" was to check your cervix early and often. The "new school" is that you and your baby are part of a well-functioning closed system and people should interrupt that as little as possible. After all, exams are a way to introduce bacteria into your otherwise closed system.

Many women are on the opposite side of your position - wishing their doctor checked them less. However, if you would like your cervix checked at your next exam, just ask. I bet your doctor would be happy to oblige.

Don´t worry, usually the important factor is to have more than 2 cm and you will start to feel "the real" contractions... You still have 1 week more to be in the "normal birth period" (38-42 weeks). If you are having your prenatal check ups weekly, you fell the movement of your baby, and you aren't bleeding, You are still OK and ready to go!

Good luck and have a great labor!

Yeah, its normal. Usually they don't check your cervix unless they thing you might be in labor. Probably the next time the doctor checks your cervix it will be when you are in full labor. If you are only 1cm you could be that for the next few days or another week or you could upgrade in the next few hours. It all depends on the baby. And every pregnancy is not the same. At least my two wasn't.

at 36 weeks they do yet another pelvic examination. From then on they do a million a week. make constructive at 36 weeks they verify you for strep b. All they do is take a cotton swab on your vagina and anal areas. in case you have this they provides you with antibiotics on a similar time as in labor... CONGRATULATIONS!!!

They don't do the cervix exam during prenatal visits, during those visits they are more interested in your sugar, and blood pressure. They figured if you don't have symptoms for labor why check for it?
