No i would say most of them do good for what they are given.

Schools can not however raise kids they are only at them for a few hours a day for about half the days of the year. If you want the public schools to actually make good people out of kids with bad parents they you have to make them boarding school and take away contact with those kids families at young ages. Other wise the kids are going to turn out pretty much like the parents and friends no matter how good the school is.

I went to public school and i believe if i had been awake in class i would have gotten a good education most my friends got them. The biggest problem with public schools is people blame them entirely for kids behavior and education. Parents are really the ones to blame. Teachers can't make kids study, do homework, or pay attention. They can only tell the parents when the kids are acting up in class. The parents have all the power.

If you don't think public school is good you also don't have to send your kids to it. you can send them to private school. Yes some public schools do better then others but it is mostly the kids not the school. If you go to one where all the parents have college degrees and think that schooling is important in a nice area of coarse it is better then one in an area with uneducated blue collar parents. Mainly because of the values the parents instill in the kids.

It could if it wasn't such a real tragedy. It is the largest example of pathetic government involvement in private matters.

Although the school system is overcrowded there are plenty of resources out there they are just unevenly distributed... and often other government funded organizations receive the funds that could make the public school system better.

I consider another example of the community (through govt) trying to do good, with lofty intentions, but a really terrible implementation.
