Regard,
Thanks

Until the crash, Francis' life was routine. When no one wanted to even hear his story about the crash he realized that his home was not interested in change or excitement. Thus he begins to flirt with danger and experiment with life. It is the beginning of being alive and not just watching life go by.
The crash, in a way, emboldens him to living rather than existing thus his dalliance with the baby sitter and the rest of the story.
