Its because the white background is more visible to drivers seeing it in their rear view mirror, and the yellow background is to make it reflective to drivers seeing it from behind.

Number plates are reflective, so under the Road Vehicle Lighting Regulations they are considered a light source. At the rear of a vehicle the only white lights allowed are a reversing light and a work light so rear plates have to be yellow. Hope this makes sense - look at the regs for more detail.

That's a good question, I have noticed that on the British television shows we have here....What would also be interesting to know is if you can tell the county (or shire) from where the cars are registered.
In the US, several states have the county of the registered owner on the middle of the plate; other states use the county of origin is coded in with the letters and/or numbers.......some other states have the weight of the vehicle coded in with the digits , and I believe one state actaully uses the occupation of the registered owner as part of the license plate numbering.

So you can tell whether you're looking at the front or the back of the car. Number plates are reflective in the dark so in low visibility the colour of the plate can help you see whether the car is coming or going.

Because you suffer excessive wealth syndrome and like to pay Car Tax.
Now if you had a decent classic Pre 1972 (I think) Morris minor , Panzer Tank, Paddy Hopkirk replica Mini Cooper or Series 1 landrover you would get free tax and could use black plates with polished or white numbers.

So someone can't swipe your front plate (You might not even notice it's missing for a long time) and put it on the back of her car. This would turn her (the thief's) car into a licensed vehicle.
Brits are smart - they figure the angles.

If someone wanted to do that they would just steal the back one.
It should say in the highway code somewhere why the plates are like that.
