The catagory I think your describing is car with big tires, not truck with extra seats. I'd throw in the honda crv and the Toyota Rav 4. They are both certainly of higher quality, but will also cost a little more. Maybe also santa fe, suzuki xl7

Mazda Tribute (actually a corporate twin for the Ford Escape)
Honda CR-V
Toyota RAV4
Hyundai Santa Fe

All of these are car-based SUV's with some semblance of off road ability.

The CRV and RAV4 are probably your best bet in comparison to price and size. As someone mentioned earlier, the CRV and Rav4 are more reliable and better built than the 3 you mentioned.

Have you noticed that on their sites you either can't find information about the gas mileage rating, it's down played, or they claim that a high of 29mpg is good?

Don't count on gas prices staying low (@ $2.50/gal is low now!) for very long. Remember that it's election season and Big Oil wants to keep the Republicans in charge. By December you can be sure prices will be rising again.
